Food Truck Step Vans!
Your Ultimate Guide to Choosing the Perfect Mobile Kitchen
Whether you’re a food truck builder or a restaurant owner looking to expand into the mobile food business, choosing the right platform is crucial. At Sapphire Specialty Trucks, we specialize in selling New & Pre-Owned Step Vans and Step Van Customizations tailored to your unique needs. Let’s explore the benefits of new versus pre-owned step vans, current inventory, pricing considerations, size options, upfit/conversion costs, and showcase some before and after transformations.
Choosing Between New and Pre-Owned
Warranty & Reliability: New step vans come with manufacturer warranties, ensuring peace of mind and minimizing maintenance costs in the early years. Some of the newer pre-owned step vans also come with the factory warranty. While we love our pre-owned units, we do advise our customers to either go brand new or slightly used when doing a food truck build-out. You can always upgrade your build-out or equipment down the road but you can’t upgrade the truck.
Budget: Consider your initial budget and long-term financial plan. Pre-owned vans are significantly cheaper than new ones, providing a more affordable entry into the food truck business. However, don’t be tempted to cheap-out in this category. You can’t replace the truck down the road if something happens, you will have to pay for a new build-out. We always suggest investing in this category.
Availability: Depending on the marketing at any one time, certain sizes or brands might be more readily available.
2. Pricing
New Step Vans
Average Price Range: New step vans typically range from $50,000 to $100,000, depending on the make, model, and features.
Price Influencers: Factors such as brand reputation, engine type, size, and included features can affect the price.
Pre-Owned Step Vans
Average Price Range: Pre-owned step vans usually cost between $20,000 and $50,000, influenced by factors like age, mileage, and condition.
Price Influencers: Previous usage, maintenance history, and any existing customizations can impact the price.
Budgeting Tips
Financing Options: Explore financing options such as loans to spread the cost over time. We do offer financing partners but they will require some sort of business experience and 15%-20% down. Explore financing here.
Cost-Benefit Analysis: Consider the initial investment versus potential long-term savings in maintenance and fuel efficiency with the purchase of a newer step van.
3. Size & Length Options
Step Vans come in 14’ - 22’ Cargo Lengths
14’ - 16’ Step Vans: Ideal for startups and compact operations. Pros: Lower cost, easier maneuverability. Cons: Limited space.
16’ - 18’ Step Vans: Balance between space and cost. Pros: Versatile, suitable for most operations. Cons: Moderate cost and maneuverability.
20’ - 22’ Step Vans: Best for extensive menus and high-volume service. Pros: Ample space for equipment. Cons: Higher cost, requires more skilled driving.
Choosing the Right Size
Considerations: Think about your menu complexity, equipment needs, and expected customer volume.
Examples: A coffee truck might only need a small van, whereas a gourmet BBQ food truck with a complex menu may require a larger vehicle for large equipment like a smoker.
4: Upfit/Conversion Costs
Basic Modifications:
Basic Modifications: Estimated at $10,000 - $40,000 depending on specific needs.
Full Custom Build-Outs: Can range from $80,000 to $200,000, covering everything from equipment to exterior design. This price estimate has lots of variables including project complexity, equipment needs, etc.
Hidden Costs: Be aware of additional expenses such as permits, insurance, and ongoing maintenance.
